Creative Writing: Make Time and Space for Writing

Make Time and Space for Your Writing: Writing is not easy, but it can be easier if you focus on writing

fresh start chapter one

Making time and space for your writing is the best way to get the attention of the creative unconscious, your muse or partner in your process. That is why I choose when I am working on a project to focus on it every day. This can include researching the story, outlining chapters or scenes, and of course sitting down and writing.

If you want to engage in creative writing, I believe it is important to have a good handle on what your story is before you start writing. This gives you the focus and as you write the story takes on a life of its own. The bottom line is you need to give yourself space and time to concentrate on your writing, to ensure you’re giving it your full attention.

Time and space can take many forms, but the idea here is to maximize creativity, and therefore output. I don’t mean this just in terms of the word-count but also regarding the quality of the words.

It’s hard to recommend an exact solution, as each writer will be different. What I can suggest is assigning an amount of time to write per day and finding a place where you won’t be distracted or where you feel inspired to write. You should also clear some space mentally, by either taking care of other jobs beforehand or switching off from the to-do list before you write.

For me this takes place in my home, my space for writing that begins right after get back from my coffee and morning walk.  I shoot for 1000 words a day. That is doable, most days I write more than that. Simply put, whatever time and space works for you is the right thing to do. Use it to maximize your productivity, and you’ll soon find your novel is taking on a life of its own.

Communing with nature and walks also help.

I cannot stress the importance of having a coherent story idea mapped out. If you want to get help on doing that and ways to connect with your muse, contact me and join our next Zoom group.
